Australian Order of Old Bastards

In response to Richard Glover's discussion about the Australian Order of Old Bastards, we received this email and the attached membership card.

Richard,

Attached is a faded (barely legible) image of my membership card of the A.O.O.B.'s. Member number 2991.

I vaguely remember being nominated drinking at a pub at The Entrance in the late 1960's or early 1970's.

It was a bit of a novelty, though the Association does do charitable work.

I carried my card in my wallet for years, though never used it.

End of an era for Old Bastards

DESPITE celebrating their 33rd birthday on February 9, the Tamworth branch of the Australasian Order of Old Bastards (AOOB) has been forced to fold.
After conducting their final raffle a little over a week ago, the Old Bastards presented their last round of cheques to a group of local charities.

The latest beneficiaries of the money raised from the AOOB's weekly raffles at West Tamworth Bowling Club were Diabetes Australia, Guide Dogs Association, Cystic Fibrosis, Co Care and Riding for the Disabled, who all received cheques for $1000.

Westmead Children's Hospital also received a donation of $650.

Members of the AOOB estimate that in their 33 years they have raised in excess of $100,000, or about $3000 each year since their inception.

Set up in Tamworth in 1975, the Old Bastards held the first ever meeting at Tamworth Workmen's Bowling Club.

During the 1980s the branch had more than 8000 members but in recent times has had trouble signing on new members willing to take up positions on the committee.

In recent months the branch has been reliant on its five longest serving members to function.

"It is very sad, a lot of people are disappointed we have had to fold," Tom Hudson, a former AOOB president told The Northern Daily Leader.

"We have over 1000 members in the Tamworth area."

Mr Hudson says there hasn't been any interest from people coming through. Where there used to be 40 people attending meetings, those numbers have dwindled to four or five over the past 12 months or so.

"People can still sign up as Old Bastards but, we won't be doing the raffles anymore," he said.

West Tamworth Bowling Club, the Old Bastards' home for the past 25 years, has offered to continue the raffles each Tuesday afternoon in place of the AOOB and will continue to support the charities that have benefited from the support of the Old Bastards.
