I get sleep paralysis quite often.. They say it is when the mind isn't in sync with the body.. between wakefulness and sleep..
it's scary and people often have experienced different "stuff" (can't think of right word now).. I recall many such experiences.. all of them scare and freak me out..  Scientists and doctors say it's nothing.. just hallucinations.. what do you make of it all?  Have any of you had such experiences? I've spoken to romantiki about it.. and came to a .. not so nice conclusion.. that of evil spirits and harm..  smile/chirol_gaan.gif .. God forbid..

this is something that has come up in my family recently...my niece suffers it badly she is only 11 bless her but she has already learnt to roll her eyes to bring her out of it!! but as a family it got us all talking and her uncle has suffered all his life and never told a sole in case people thought he was mad!!! it happens to me too but less often these days thank God.....i like you thought it was evil spirits because of the feeling of being held down but when it happens now i dont know how i do it but i find something thats not right in the dream such as a door or window in the wrong place and it wakes me up!!! i wish i could explain to you how it happens but i can only think i was able to do this as soon as i believed it was a dream and nothing else but i totally feel for you it is truly terrifying and unless you have experienced it you cant realy grasp how terryfying....my hubby used to have to bring our dog up to sleep on the bed with me when he got up for work coz i was so scared to be alone.....i was convinced our house was possessed....sounds rediculous now but at the time i truly feared for my life......my sis in law sent me a leaflet she got from the doc and it said in there its more common than you think but people dont want to talk about it!!!! so dont worry mkatta you are not alone....

I experienced that a few times.. yes its freaky at that moment when u try really hard to open your eyes and move but u couldnt.. and u are fully aware of your surroundings and that u have already woken up.

I experienced those things holding my head with their hands and another time it held my legs, i could even feel the fingernails of that thing.. images/icones/icon9.gif I usually panick awhile and run around the house until it let go of me.. it sounds ridiculous too, but its real..

It's amazing when you start to talk to people about things taht are happening in your life just how many people there are who have similar things going on in theirs..

As shown by this post of Nina's and her niece..It goes to show that we aren't alone when it comes to life and taht we should "talk" more to each other doesn't it..

I thought I'd grow out of it, but haven't.. studies say that people experience it at least once in a lifetime.. i experience it at least once a month..

Im glad I dont suffer from this I hardly remember my dreams I only remember a few a year! They say you dream everynight so I can only assume im not remembering them anyway.
My neice had a really bad experience one night she was only about 6 or 7 she woke in the night (or we thought she was awake) and she was screaming and flapping her hands around at something above her saying it was trying to get her she was in a terrible state. Her mum had to literally lie on top of her to calm her down.

Well it's always good to share feelings/experiences.. We speak to each other every day!

My siblings also suffer from it, just not as often.. my boyfriend doesn't and can't comprehend what it is cos he hasn't had it..

The good thing is there is an explaination and a name for it..

Is there some thing that triggers it?? Like a period of stress, being really tired over excited or something..

It would be so scary for a little one, but equally as scary for anyone though..

Yes it is very scary.. the last one i had was about a week ago.. an afternoon nap/siesta.. and I was lying in bed and my brother was lying next to me... I could feel his touch (that's the thing, you can feel pressure of someones touch, breath, weight) and  he was saying to me "You'll be ok, take care.. and watch what you eat"..

My brother is in the Philippines as we speak on a detox program for his psoriasis ..so when i felt his touch i was molto freaked.. wouldn't settle until i spoke to him.. he is very spiritual and I thought maybe he was having an out of body experiece which freaked me even more.. but no.. it was just plain old boring sleep paralysis

Some say stress triggers it.. but i get it out of the blue.. I hope my darling neices NEVER experience it..

I can understand what you are all going throug, not out of my own experience but in my job i worked with people who have the same problems!Ther is no perfect cure for this and often Docters prescribe medication! But with our patients we do a lot of relaxation and meditation, they are learnt how to controll their breathing! They have to find a go to sleep ritual for themselves and they have to use that every time they go o sleep!
The sleepparalysis and fears who come with it is defenatly less frequent with most of them!

I've also learnt that in order to wake up from it I have to control my breathing.. hard as it is, cos you're panicking..
I'd never go on medication for it though.. what kind of patients do u work with Wendy?

At the moment i can't wok because of my ilness and the harsh treatement!
But i work in a psychiatric hospital on the "Addiction" ward, treating people with all sorts of addictions,alcohol,drugs,meds,sex....
But i also give relaxation therapy and do discussion groups with other patients!
And i am always on call for palliative patients in two hospitals!
I really miss work and hope to be able to go back soon!

Oh NO Wendy I hope you get to work soon and that there is nothing majorly wrong with you!!  smile/biggrindaisy.gif

Kind of scary that I should experience what your patients do.. Maybe it's my over consumption of beer that causes it
