World Superbike 2008 - Round One (Qatar) Superbike Race 1 Superbike season 2008 got away in the sunny climes of Qatar and Superpole supremo Troy Corser announced his intentions for the new season with a blistering Superpole lap more than half a second better than next best Ruben Xaus. The Spaniard was the leading light for Ducati in the Superpole session ahead of fellow Sterilgarda Ducati man Max Biaggi. Germany’s Max Neukirchner put a Suzuki on the front row ahead of Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati), Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha) while Troy Bayliss slipped down the order in the Superpole session due to not feeling comfortable with the tyre he chose for his Superpole lap. The Australian had been very fast in all sessions and second row or not was always going to be a factor when the lights went out. Yukio Kagayama rounded out the second row on the second of the three Alstare Suzuki entries. A dreadful start to the season for Honda’s new Fireblade with Carlos Checa just sneaking into the top ten while fellow Honda men Gregorio Lavilla, Kenan Sofuoglu, Roberto Rolfo all made the Superpole cut off but had not set a competitive pace all weekend as their respective teams search how to get the best out of the all new mount. Kawasaki are also fielding an all new mount for 2008 and like Honda were also clearly suffering from a lack of race development with the best of the four green meanies piloted by Andrea Badovini to a lacklustre only managing 16th place on the grid. Troy Corser got a good run off the line but it was Suzuki power that pushed Max Neukirchner into the lead by turn one ahead of Corser and Haga. The Yamaha and Suzuki men looked very strong while Bayliss seemed to be easing his way into the race and after three laps was still in seventh place but that leading group of seven was still only covered by two seconds. Lap five saw Corser slip past Neukirchner to take the lead while Biaggi joined the leading trio and declared his challenge for the win. Bayliss also slipped up a gear and peddled his #21 Ducati into fifth place and set about chasing down the quarter of madmen more than a second in front of him. Neukirchner was not ready to roll over for Corser and pushed his GSX-R1000 back through to the lead on the next lap ahead of Corser and Haga. Biaggi attempted a brave move up the inside of Haga for third place but had his nose wiped by the popular Japanese tyro and had to change his line. A lap later Haga looked to take his hand off the car bar to make some sort of gesture but that turned out to be a very silly move as that unsettled his Yamaha and catapulted him into the weeds with Bayliss just managing to avoid the carnage. Thus the closely bunched pack of five up the front had now reduced to four with Neukirchner looking strong at the front while Corser, Biaggi and Bayliss gave chase. As the race entered the halfway point Bayliss slipped from fourth to second in one foul swoop and quickly closed onto the tail of Neukirchner’s Suzuki. He wasn’t there for long though before he decided to take his turn up front while Biaggi followed his lead by immediately starting to attack Neukirchner after pushing Corser back to fourth. Just as it was looking as though Bayliss might run away he made a serious error and ran very wide which allowed all three of his fellow protagonists to pass him with ease. Not half a lap later Bayliss again ran very wide and again nearly ended up on his head. Things were starting to look very bad for Bayliss but he certainly hadn’t given up the chase despite losing almost two seconds on a single lap. A titanic tussle between Neukirchner and Biaggi allowed Bayliss to make that ground back up over the following two laps and in doing so set a new fastest lap of the race. Again though Bayliss nearly met with disaster after attempting a move on Corser but luckily both men remained upright. Another rider was looking to join the party also with Ruben Xaus starting to loom large in the distance. With six laps to run however Max Biaggi was looking the hot favourite for the win after managing to escape a little from his pursuers. They hadn’t given up the chase though as Bayliss took Corser, then Neukirchner on his way through to second place. If Bayliss had nine lives he had already used half of them in the race but he looked in no mood to settle for second. Ruben Xaus had managed to chase down Neukirchner to steal fourth place from the German who had started to lose some speed after setting the early pace in the 18 lap encounter. Up front though Bayliss had managed to wriggle his Ducati up onto the tail of Biaggi and declared his intentions by clambering all over the back of the Italian but the full factory Ducati looked to have no top speed advantage over the Sterilgarda bike with Bayliss making no ground on Biaggi down the main straight to get the last lap board. Halfway around the final lap Biaggi looked to have the wood on Bayliss but Bayliss slotted his #21 Xerox Ducati up the inside only a couple of corners before the end, Biaggi came back at him at the penultimate corner and went back through to the lead but ran a fraction too wide which allowed Bayliss to sweep back through and get the better run onto the main straight to take the win by 0.396 of a second. Corser 1.8 seconds behind the winner in third place while Xaus made it three Ducati's in the top four. So on debut the new 1098 Ducati, that actually displaces a full 1198cc as allowed under the new for 2008 rules, makes its presence felt in a very ominous way. How long before the Ducati machines have to hobbled in the interests of parity…? The litre four-cylinders are certainly still in the race however with Haga setting the fastest lap of the race and Corser's dominant performance in Superpole certainly pointing to the fact that Yamaha have a very competitive YZF-R1 at their disposal for 2008. Neukirchner the clear leading light for Suzuki and Checa a brilliant sixth place on the new for 2008 Fireblade finishing more than 20 seconds ahead of next best Fireblade pilot Roberto Rolfo who finished in a lowly 11th place narrowly ahead of fellow Honda men Kenan Sofuoglu and Gregorio Lavilla. Honda teams clearly have a lot of work to do in order to get their new mount ready to battle for race wins. Checa's sixth place though at least gives them some encouragement. The same can't be said for Kawasaki with Regis Laconi battling to 15th place and no Kawasaki rider getting within two seconds of Haga's fastest lap of the race...

Hello to all! Just dall I am returned' infinite journey of return dall' Australia. ... alone 24 hours of flight for leave l' incredible island of Phillip Island and to repatriate! The fatigue goes in second plan rethinking to the premium adrenaliniche competitions of Sunday, races on one of the circuits more "from bivido" of everything the World one; a really sole track! The GP of the Qatar of the past week has given the road to the championship: l' debut was exciting: movement and new squad, do not hide to have experienced yourselves a little' of tension! The budget was positive, above all in view of the GP of Phillip. The competitions to Losail important data for the successive competition allowed to collect us: has treated in practice of a first test with the new CBR, not still entire to 100%! And l'Australia.. that turns! The made work in Qatar allowed to be able to arrive us already to the second challenge to a competitive level! We were of it enthusiastic! I obtained the tenth placement in gara1 even if the potential would have been surely more high: l' utilization of a defective tire compromised the mine first set... In gara2 in fact the things went quite otherwise: I had for all the set a step of 1 better second with respect to the first and after little turns I found me already to fight with Haga for the fifth position! Last Haga I was premium concentrated towards the group of the first four pilots…and my rhythm myself surely would have allowed to begin an attractive bustle with them... if alone from the muretto not pits appeared a yellow sign with written "44 JUMP START"! Packed l' reprimand I have not remained that to travel the lane stand to speed limited for then to return in track distributing dall' last position, how expects regulation! In effects, during the departure, four pilots has moved before the other and I was deceptive also I from this movement; I took again the brakes in hand, doing not earn practically nothing, but now was late. I am however satisfied some potential that we succeeded to express already in this second meeting; exploiting well the next test to Valencia of 13 and 14 March we could arrive at the third one of Championship really to all gasss! I feel myself in large affinity with the team, that it works day and night with enormous passion, and with the mine new movement that a very clean leader grants me, almost from 250: divertentissima! This new adventure excites me really a lot; I do not see l' now of to leave for Valencia, this time without Jump Start! Gasss! Roby44

Roby was very pleased with his bike set up. But for that jump start he would have been right up there in Race 2. Very similar to 2003 when he won at The island!!

I want to find the better set up for my bike here in Valencia to be ready for the race” Roberto Rolfo – Superbike : “We must be happy with this test because today we improved from the last race in Australia. In the third competition of the world championship Superbike to Valencia, Roberto Rolfo left from the fifth line. In competition 1 after an excellent departure, has carried in eleventh position and in little turns gained a fantastic seventh place. Unlucky because of a problem to the back tire, in the second part of the competition was compelled to lose positions and concluded its generous competition to the tenth place. Unfortunately the same problem to the back tire has presented also in competition two. Roberto is itself shrewd immediately of not to have grip on the back wheel and in little turns lost a lot of positions. Its final result a seventeenth place was that does not satisfy certainly the Pilot. Roberto Rolfo: "I am displeased because in one competition it had done a good departure, but after little turns I began to have problems to the back rubber. I did not succeed to monitor the movement how I would have had to and I was compelled to lower my rhythm and to lose some positions. Without this problem I could have stayed certainly in the group of the first. Unfortunately the problem was not resolved for competition 2 where sin from the first turns I am me shrewd that the rubber slid many. I decrease my pace and to satisfy myself of to finish the competition. For luck we will be quick some private test to resolve this problem".

TEST TO MONZA Hello to all, Just I am repatriated to Lugano after the two days of test organized on the fantastic circuit of Monza. The mine it squares it decided participant, together to the team Dukedoms and Yamaha, to the days of tests in Italy to experience to resolve the problems met to Valencia on the occasion of the third competition of Championship! The Spanish stage has shown more difficult of the expected, above all in the day of Sunday, when the condition of the track is changed suddenly, provoking to a lot of pilots problems of grip.. surely you will have noted the numerous slid at little turns from the departure. How did I say yourselves, in the course of the days of test our gap from the first was of a second on the swift turn, good but not sufficient to qualify itself in superpole.. while the step competition was really promising! I did not see, in fact, too compromising to leave back because I was hopeful of the good step competition found in test. Sunday I have concentrated much on the departure and I succeeded to detach a lot well: from the eighteenth position on the grill to the seventh place in the first curves in both the manches! The problems with the back rubber met in the successive turns did not allow to maintain me the good positions gained in the departures of both the competitions. In the course of the test to Monza, under an incredible downpour, we succeeded to work a lot well sull' order of the movement to avoid that the ecessive problem of usury of the back tire you are presented again in the next competitions of Championship. The next appointment will be in Holland on the circuit of Assen; it is discussed of a track that I love a lot, above all in the stroke "old" of the plan, that swifter! Darò like always the utmost, even more caused from your incredible fan!! A thanks special to the boys of the Fan Club that they arrived until in Spain equipped of banners! Roby44

Poor Roby!!! 07 May 2008 MONZA WITHOUT ROBY Roby will not participate the fifth competition of the world Superbike that will be run to Monza this week end. An old interview with Roby... How did your passion for the two wheels begin? When did you first approach motorbikes? I inherited the great passion for the two wheels from my dad, Italian champion of uphill sprint in 1980. My first experiences on the racetrack have to be traced back to sixteen years ago, when, in the saddle of a Honda 750, I discovered that I had a great passion for motorbikes. When did you make your debut in a championship? It was in 1996 when I participated in the Gran Prix of San Marino on the circuit of Imola, the following year I repeated the experience with the racing stable Carrizzosa. In the saddle of a Honda I obtained at the end of the season, a good 11° place classifying myself as the best Italian rider on a non official motorbike. Chronological descrïption of the career. 1999 he competes with Aprilia of the Vasco Rossi Racing Team with which he confirms himself at important levels on a private motorbike also including the pole position at the Gran Prix of Valencia. 2000 He returns to the racetrack in substitution of the injured rider Hoffman obtaining a praiseworthy 6° place in Germany, 9° place in Holland and 10° place in Australia! 2001 in saddle of a private Aprilia he obtains 4° place in the final classification obtaining the title of best private rider in history. 2002 It is the official Team Fortuna, in saddle of a Honda with which he gains the 3° place in the world classification after being on 5 occasions just a step from his first important world victory. 2003 Sachsenring and Phillip Island are the first world victories of a season that sees him protagonist up to the last challenge during which a technical problem prevents him from battling right to the very end of the race and winning the title. He finishes by winning the 2° place of the world classification. 2004 Roby begins with the clear intention of regaining the title missed by a hair’s breadth the previous year but, after the striking victory on the circuit of Jerez, he has to face numerous technical difficulties for the whole season and has to compete with a motorbike disproportionate to his stature; he therefore finishes the season in the eighth place of the world classification. 2005 the disappointment for the negative season does not discourage Roby at all, on the contrary, it spurs him on to pass to MotoGP and to once again express his great talent in the saddle of a private Ducati of the D’Antin Pramac team, succeeding in gaining points on almost every occasion, despite the use of tyres still in the development stage. 2006 Roby makes his debut in the World SuperBike Championship in the saddle of a Ducati 999 of the private team SC Caracchi winning an excellent 5° place in Australia, 7° place in Qatar and Monza, and competing in numerous races amongst the top-tens riders. Brief chronological descrïption of the season 2007. 2007 was my second year in the SBK World Championship, this time in saddle of a Honda of the HANNspree Ten Kate Team; unfortunately during the GP of Monza, a technical problem during the last lap prevented me from gaining a 2° place in the classification and the first podium in SuperBike. Despite this I gave my maximum in every race and succeeded in being always a step from the podium. At the end of the season my result has been a 7° world positioning. What are your forecasts for the season 2008. In 2008 I will continue racing in the saddle of a Honda entrusted to the Hannspree Honda Althea Team: it is a team of great experience that boasts excellent results in the racing world at world level, in its debut in the Superbike Championship. It is a great incentive for me to take part in a “completely Italian” Team in which you can breathe "passion" and a friendly atmosphere: these ingredients I’m sure will spur me on. My aim is therefore significant; it is to aim at being really competitive and to fight every race for the first positions.

Due to his poor physical condition, Roberto Rolfo lined up on the last row of the grid for today’s first ever World Superbike races held at Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City. In race one, after an excellent start he recovered more than five positions, but unfortunately during the second part of the race he started feeling a lot of pain in his left shoulder and arm causing him to lose positions and he ended the race in twentieth place. In race two Rolfo did not start as well as in the first race, but in a few short laps he was able to reach the nineteenth position. Also in race two Roberto suffered the same physical problem that limited him in race one, but he overcome the pain and with some fearless overtaking he gained an amazing sixteenth position. Roberto Rolfo – Race one : “Starting from the last row always makes life difficult, but after the first few opening laps I found it extremely difficult to keep up with the group in front of me due to the weakness in my left arm. The bike is very fast when riding straight but I lost some important time when changing direction because of the pain in my shoulder and arm. I’m not happy having finished in twentieth position, but due to my physical condition I’m satisfied that I ended the race. Of course, I’ll try my best to improve my final position in race two”. Roberto Rolfo – Race two : “Race two was really better than the first one. I want to thank Clinica Mobile doctors because I had a very effective treatment from them and I felt less pain. I did not start as well as in race one, but I found a good rhythm also because I rode the bike using my legs more than my arms. I am pleasantly surprised at my result, because Friday evening I didn’t even know if it was possible to ride the bike. My Honda was really fast today and the team has worked extremely hard. I’d like to thank them for their help this weekend. Starting from Tuesday I’ll start intensive rehabilitation to make sure that I’ll be in top condition for the next race in Nurburgring.”

Roberto has submitted yesterday to a' further specialized visit to the left shoulder to verify, in manner deepened, the cause of the complications met in the course of the Big Prize of Miller Motorsport in USA. Roby ran in America with the collarbone fractured, now calcified almost completely; nevertheless during the weekend continued to warn sharp pains and yieldings and was him possible to finish the alone competitions means l' aid of anesthetics. The Mobile Clinic advised to the Pilot a more detailed visit a time I return from the USA, hypothesizing a greater complication with respect to the simple break. The answer of the specialist, that yesterday visited Roberto, the difficulty explains well met from the Pilot: did not there be only a break of the collarbone slightly decomposed, that is consolidating to the better one, but also a break to the bone of the Glenoide, leaves some bachelor that accommodates the head of the omero; extremely urged in the compressions of the leader in track. Roberto submits not to an operation; will follow a route of therapy specific riabilitativa, with l' help of the Mobile Clinic, to the end of to find how much first a good physical shape in view of the next competitions of the World Superbike
