Phillip island testing in Januray saw James Toseland clock 5th fastest ahead of Capirossi, Melandri & Hayden.

Toseland, who beat Troy Bayliss in the second World Superbike race in Phillip Island just over a year ago, was making his MotoGP debut at the spectacular Aussie venue.
And he immediately found himself on the pace, dipping into the 1.32 bracket after just four laps.

He then reeled off a series of consistent times inside the 1.32 barrier, and clocked his best lap of 1.30.864 on the 49th lap of an 81-lap stint. His best lap was just 0.03s slower than team-mate Colin Edwards' best time on race tyres, with the American topping the timesheets having opted to run two Michelin qualifying tyres.

His best time was 0.7s slower than Casey Stoner.

Toseland said: "The first few laps I was able to hit the exact same six inches of track and I got up to speed much quicker than I did in Sepang and Jerez. It was nice to be at the sharp end of the times.

"I didn't realise but track knowledge is even more important with these bikes to help things come together. When you can hit the same spot lap after lap without thinking about it then you can really concentrate on the bike set-up and that makes a big difference to help gradually improve.

"I've got a slight problem with entry to the fast corners. Just as I tip in I get a bit of chatter from the front. I'm losing quite a lot of time because of that problem because they are in such fast parts of the track.  I could make up quite a lot of time if it wasn't for that.

I'll try a new setting tomorrow morning to try and help before I do a race simulation. But it's nice to be doing decent lap times with a few problems. And I actually passed somebody on the brakes for the first time ever in MotoGP. I passed Chris Vermeulen going into the first corner turn which I was pretty proud of."

James Toseland can stun the Moto GP world by winning on his debut in Qatar, according to World Superbike legend Carl Fogarty.

More StoriesRossi: Toseland wrong to join Tech-3
Toseland, 27, will ride for the Tech-3 Yamaha team this season after winning his second World Superbike title in 2007 with Ten Kate Honda.

And fellow Briton Fogarty, who is the most successful rider in World Superbike history with four world crowns and 59 wins, sees no reason why he cannot shake up the Grand Prix paddock right from the word go at the Losail circuit in Doha.

"I think he'll be really fired up and I'd love to see him win a race - I really would," Fogarty told Motorcycle News.

"There is no reason why he can't. All he's doing is riding a bike that's a little bit faster and a little bit lighter - that's all. At the circuits he knows like Qatar - where he's already won in Superbikes - he can go out and win the race.

Fogarty knows what he is talking about. He finished sixth as a wildcard in only his second Moto GP race - the 1990 Swedish Grand Prix - at a time when his only international competition had been in endurance events and road races.

He is convinced that Toseland, with two WSBK titles and 16 wins to his name, is in a much better position to take a race victory against the likes of Valentino Rossi and world champion Casey Stoner.

But he insists that the key to success is getting enough testing mileage under his belt before the season starts.

"He needs to get plenty of testing and not get fazed by the big names," Fogarty added. "I'd love to see him win at Donington especially, although that would make me well jealous."

No Briton has won a Moto GP race since the late Barry Sheen triumphed at the Swedish Grand Prix 27 years ag

Speak for yourself Maree, i wouldn't shag Valentino if you paid me.

I don't find him attractive at all.

But i wouldn't sleep with any of them, it's my bloody pride getting in the way of a good time again ...

I wouldn't like to be some racers booty call, i'm higher up the chain than that..

Hmmm Toseland was riding for Ducati once in superbikes..

But the superbikes are a streetbike, the motogp is a prototype..

Hmmm I wouldn't imagine James would move rides just yet ..
